ORMOCER^® barrier coatings

Contrary to popular perception, packaging films are high-tech materials and have to fulfill many different properties.

Most importantly, ORMOCER® barrier coatings aim to protect from external influences and at the same time ensure that there is no unwanted migration through the packaging. Other requirements for packaging materials include environmental friendliness (in terms of recyclability or biodegradability), processing, marketing-friendly design and, last but not least, cost. In order to prevent permeation, i.e. the migration of substances through the packaging, ORMOCER^® coatings can serve as protective barrier coatings that are applied to the packaging material (film, paper, etc.).

ORMOCER^® barrier coatings therefore prevent various substances such as gases, ions or molecules from penetrating the packaging material. The protective layers thus keep out aromas, monomeric impurities, plasticizers, oxygen, CO₂ and other migrating substances. Even a very thin ORMOCER^® layer (a few µm thick) is sufficient to significantly reduce the migration of substances.

The areas of application are diverse:

From food and cosmetic packaging to technical packaging and technical barriers for solar displays or sensors, each application places special demands on the barrier layers. All of these can be addressed in conjunction with ORMOCER^® coatings. To increase their specific effect, ORMOCER^® barrier layers can also be combined with other barrier materials (primers, SiOx or AlOx layers). Depending on the substrates, different ORMOCER^® formulations are used that are specifically tailored to the substrates and applications. This allows certain properties to be adjusted, such as the barrier effect and flexibility of the material.
