ORMOCER® coatings for corrosion protection can be used in many different ways, but are primarily used for metals and alloys.

ORMOCER® coatings can also provide effective protection on glass, which can be attacked in an alkaline environment. ORMOCER® corrosion protection coatings are most frequently used on solid metals, but can also be applied to metallized glass or plastic. ORMOCER® coatings protect the various materials against corrosive media such as acids, corrosion-causing ions, solvents and, to a certain extent, even alkalis.

The protective effect is based on an effective barrier against corrosion-causing ions thanks to a high inorganic and organic network density, intrinsic chemical stability and good adhesion. Furthermore, certain additives can further increase the chemical resistance of ORMOCER® coatings and thus improve the protection of the material.

Versatile applications of ORMOCER® coatings: Top Coat and Primer

On the one hand, ORMOCER® coatings are used as the top protective layer (“Top Coat”). It is important that the component to be protected is completely covered with the coating. Should corrosive media nevertheless reach the substrate, e.g. through cracks, the corrosion should only be limited to the affected area and no extensive delamination should be triggered.

However, ORMOCER® coatings are much more frequently used as so-called “Primer” to enable improved adhesion of the top layers. The ORMOCER® coating forms chemically covalent bonds to the substrate, for example metal. At the same time, however, the ORMOCER® primer also forms chemical-covalent bonds with the top layer applied on top. This double bond creates a particularly stable adhesion, which also has a positive effect in the salt spray test, for example.

Due to their chemical properties, anti-corrosion coatings are very hard. Therefore, they can also act as a scratch protection.

Areas of application of the ORMOCER® anti-corrosion coatings

ORMOCER® corrosion protection coatings are applied to metals in particular to protect the substrate from corrosive media such as acids, alkalis or solvents. The ORMOCER® corrosion protection layer can act as a “Top Coat” (top protective coating) that completely encloses the substrate.

ORMOCER® is often used as a primer between the substrate and the top layer, as the ORMOCER® layer achieves particularly good adhesion due to the chemical-covalent bond to both interfaces (metal substrate and TopCoat). Should cracks nevertheless occur, this prevents delamination of the coating over the entire surface. Due to the high degree of hardness, ORMOCER® corrosion protection coatings also act as scratch protection. The coatings are used for household and consumer goods as well as for technical applications such as machine components, etc.

Analysis methods

The following analysis methods are available at the Fraunhofer ISC, which are used in development projects or are also offered as a service. With these methods, different corrosion phenomena can be reproducibly applied to the coated substrates. They can also be used to accelerate the generation of corrosion effects.

  • Acetic acid and neutral salt spray test: Accelerated corrosion for metallic substrates
  • Condensation water climate chamber: Influence of high humidity (100 % r. h. at a simultaneously elevated temperature of 40 °C)
  • Climate chambers with freely selectable humidity and temperature profiles
  • QUV test: Combination of alternating humidity and UV radiation
